Fall 2006-SpringĀ 2008 Activities:
Since its inception, the center has organized and sponsored numerous events, inclucing:
- Co-sponsored a public presentation by a prominent Chinese scholar, Yuezhi Zhao of Simon Fraser University, Canada, to deliver a public presentation and meet with Purdue Calumet faculty and students, November 10, 2008.
- Co-sponsored and or organized the 2008 GCA conference involving Purdue University Calumet, Sultan Qaboos University, and Bayan College, Muscat, Oman, October 27-28, 2008.
- As a part of the established “Lecture Series on Global Understanding,” co-sponsored a major panel discussion, US-Iran Conflicts: Confrontation or Negotiation?, Purdue University Calumet, September 25, 2008.
- Co-sponsored and organized an international conference on Global Communication and Development, in cooperation with three Chinese universities, Duke and Purdue University Calumet. The inaugural conference of the Global Communication Association (GCA) was held at Shanghai University, October 18-19, 2007.
- Participated in the joint Purdue WL-Purdue Cal research center abroad program and visited several universities and centers, Hong Kong, China, 2007.
- Invited Felicia Middlebrooks of WBBM News Radio, for the public showing of her award-winning documentary, Somebody’s Child: The Redemption of Rwanda, 2006.
- Invited five prominent religion scholars from Notre Dame, Northwestern, City Colleges of Chicago, Brigham Young, and Purdue University Calumet to participate on an interactive panel discussion, Inter-Faith Dialogue, at Purdue’s Alumni Hall, April 2007.
- Invited the author of the award-winning book, The Story of My Life: An Afghan Girl on the Other Side of the Sky, Farah Ahmedi, for a public presentation at Purdue University Calumet in April of 2006.
- Provided support to cover expenses for two students to document their Venezuela trip, in conjunction with a course on “Media and Politics of Latin America,” team-taught by Dr. Lee Artz (Communications) and Dr. Kathleen Tobin (Latin American Studies). The students produced a documentary which was presented to the campus community.
- Sponsored two interactive roundtable discussions at the 2006 Global Fusion Conference in Chicago; The War and Peace in the Age of Globalization and Globalization and its Discontents. In addition, several Purdue University Calumet graduate students presented papers.
